Course overview

Our Motion Graphics short course gives you the opportunity to study the first 14 or 21 weeks of our MA Motion Graphics degree. This option is suited to students who want intensive training without academic qualifications. You’ll complete the first 2-3 modules of the programme and develop specialist skills 2D and 3D motion graphics.

Our Motion Graphics courses focus on the principles behind the design methodologies and artistic practice from the fields of motion graphics and motion design, as well as their application in real-time rendering to a professional standard, and the practical vocational experience needed to secure a job.

Daniel Amor

Meet your tutor, Daniel Amor

Daniel’s career in the VFX industry started in 2008, first as 2D Generalist working with After Effects and later as 3D Generalist in Cinema 4D. Following his move to London and working as a Motion Designer, Daniel focused on improving his skills in animation by studying 3D Animation at Escape Studios. Since 2018, he has worked on projects like Marvel’s She-Hulk, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and The Marvels. His Motion Graphics credits include projects at NBC Universal.

In his spare time, you will find Daniel working on his personal projects, improving his skills in VFX or at film festivals.

Course modules

These modules are common with the first 14-21 weeks of our MA Motion Graphics.

Module 1 - Motion Graphics 2D
7 weeks

Using industry standard 2D motion graphic creation tools and techniques students will learn to create content for use across multiple disciplines to a professional standard.

Topics include:  

  • Font (Typography)  
  • Layers and cameras  
  • Critical thinking in motion design  
  • Animating typefaces  
  • Alpha and luma mattes  
  • Puppet pin tool and rigging  
  • Interpreting client briefs  
  • 12 principles of animation  
  • Generating ideas in motion design  
  • Isometric animation  
  • Project workflow, timings and organisation  
  • Expressions  
  • Camera tracking, compositing and rotoscoping 
  • Time displacement for kinetic typography  
  • Time remapping and posterising
  • Mixed media techniques and collage style 

Project: Motion Graphics animation based on a pop culture icon that students will choose (such as a painting, a brand, a movie…), to create a short commercial, trailer, title sequence or corporate video based on it. 

Module 2 - Motion Graphics 3D
7 weeks

Using industry standard concept creation tools and techniques students will create 3D and 2D art for use across multiple disciplines to a professional standard.

Topics include:

  • 3D Composition  
  • Animating a simple scene using keyframing, looping and dynamics  
  • Cloners and generators and how to use them  
  • Controlling effectors and other objects using fields  
  • Using primitives, generators and deformers to model basic shapes  
  • Edit mode  
  • Manipulating points, edges and polys to edit and sculpt polygonal geometry  
  • PBR, material types, reflectance channel  
  • Megascans, bricks material, displacement  
  • Applying materials to prims and meshes with UV wrapping  
  • Rendering tests and adjust render settings  
  • Main light types, HDRI, 3-point studio lighting 
  • Common tricks like flags and gobos 
  • Adding camera animation 
  • Compositing rendered animation 
  • Track mattes 
  • Grading, FX and colour correction 

Project: Motion Graphics animation where students will use a combination of live-action footage and Motion Graphics elements to create a short commercial or corporate video, including the animation of a logo.

Module 3 - Motion Graphics - Advanced (21 week course only)
7 weeks

Using industry standard content creation tools and techniques students will create 3D and 2D art for use in a real-time pipeline to a professional standard.

Topics include:

  • Efficient 3D modelling
  • Lighting in Game Engine
  • Optimisation and best practice
  • Advanced Modelling
  • Sculpting
  • Asset Prep and Processing
  • Baking for texturing and materials
  • Procedural and PBS workflows
  • Advanced Materials and textures
  • Advanced Lighting
  • Environment systems
  • Rendering effects.

Project: Motion Graphics animation in 3D, where students will use all the tools learned throughout the course to create a short commercial, a short music video or some abstract animation to a professional standard, that will be used in the portfolio.

We accept international students for our short courses, with no difference in course fees or administration costs. 

The Standard Visitor visa allows students to come to the UK to study for a course of up to six months at an accredited institution. Depending on your nationality, you may need to apply for a standard visitor visa prior to departure from your home country. For more information visit:

Online study requirements

We can provide remote access to our workstations during teaching time. Due to availability restrictions, we highly advise you to have your own set up at home to study in your own time.

More things you’ll need:

  • A strong internet connection
  • Cloud storage or external hard drive to back up your work, 1TB+ recommended
  • A three-button mouse or graphics tablet. Please note, the Wacom Intuos Pro range of tablets have the best support for our remote desktop software and provide the best experience.
  • A computer microphone (and optionally a webcam)
  • Note-taking materials.

Payment plans

We offer payment plan options for all courses. Following an initial deposit at registration stage, your chosen payment plan will break down your remaining fees into up to three instalments, to be paid before the end of the course.

Software
  • Adobe After Effects is a highly versatile layer-based motion graphics software used to animate and composite designs together.
  • Cinema 4D is used for 3D modelling, animation and simulations effects. It seamlessly integrates with After Effects and can render out high-quality 3D visuals hrough render engines, such as Redshit and V-Ray.
  • Adobe Photoshop is an image creation, graphic design and photo editing software developed by Adobe. It is considered one of the most popular tools for Digital Artists.
  • Adobe Illustrator is a vector editing software for designing storyboard, logos, icons, typography and complex illustrations that can be maniuplated without losing quality.
